MSI motherboard doa or hard drive DOA?

Hey I'm new here, I just built my first PC and starts up perfectly fine into the bios, sadly it doesn't seem to recognize my HDD (WD blue wd10ezex) in the system settings, I tried to change ports and modes, it sometimes pops up (only in ahci it seems)but I can never find it in the windows 8 setup. Any help?
The motherboard is an MSI Z87- G41

Have you tried a different sata cable? sometimes it actually helps, also try running a different sata power connecter for the HD and see if that clears things up a bit.

Are you trying to run a preinstalled old Win 8 installation or trying to do a new install?

I'm trying to do a fresh install from USB, I changed Both power and SATA cable With no luck

Can you try the drive in another computer and see if that is the issue?

That is bad since now we do not know for sure if it is the drive or the SATA on the motherboard. Reading your post again ACHI is the correct setting for the drive and you said it showed up in BIOS on that setting?

I only manage to get it on the bios by enabling the hot plug option in the bios on the port, I only managed to get it once in IDE mode and got it to install windows, but it seemed that the drive didn't install windows right as it said it was missing key files to start

That leaves us with drive or board, either try drive another computer or another drive with the board to know for sure. (could be an excuse to get an SSD)

So today I tried again to boot it up, but with the hard drive isolated so that I could see and feel what was going on. It seems so make a constant click noise and sometimes seem to scratch, it also out of nowhere decides to shut down after several minutes in the bios.

Sounds like the drive gone bad, clicking sounds indicate there is something wrong with the reading/writing arm.

Now i'm pretty sure it is the drive as I saw while looking for the drive to install windows 7 on during setup that it had 0.0mb of total size and not space left
