Hi, I currently have a workstation that has the following setup:

Xeon w3530 2.8GHz
2x4GB DDR3 1066MHz ECC
GTX 660 2GB (Asus DirectCu II)
WDC 500GB + 2x1TB 7200RPM

I'm wondering how would the w3530 compare to a w3565 3.2GHz?
Or if I were to have a new build, how would the w3530 compare to the i5 2500K 3.3GHz all in real-world gaming? And would this option be worth it?

I'm playing things like GTA, Skyrim, Metro 2033, Resident Evil 5/6, Crysis 2/3. Games along those lines. Thanks for input.

W3530 CPU Mark:

W3565 CPU Mark:

2500k CPU Mark:

As in relative performance, there is very little difference between the two Xeon processors. I doubt you would be able to tell the difference. Not worth upgrading.

As for the Xeon vs the 2500k, I think you could tell the difference in processor intensive games. With focus on gaming, the W3530 is on par with an AMD Phenom II 965 or a Intel i3-3220. If the game is GPU based, those processors will be fine. The interesting thing here is W3530 is 3 years old. In my opinion...

I think your current build is good and has a little more life in it. You still have a very capable computer.

Are you disappointed or unhappy with performance?

Hi barto, I totally forgot to look at the 3565's benchmark score. So according to you, that CPU is out of the question. Thanks for laying out the differences and similarities for me.

I wouldn't say that I'm disappointed, but I just know that it could be faster and am wondering if there really was a difference between my current system and an upgrade to something like an i5 2500k. In addition, do you know if any of those games I mentioned can get CPU intensive? It seems like GTAIV is. Also, what games (besides BF4) are really taxing on the CPU?

Sorry for the late response.

Newer "brand name" games usually are hardware intensive. BF4 isn't as CPU intensive as BF3 is. But both do lean GPU.

Skyrim is CPU heavy. Metro 2033 is designed to make PCs cry (more GPU thou). Crysis 2/3, again designed to make PCs cry (particularly 3). ( http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crysis-3-performance-benchmark-gaming,3451-8.html ) RE 5/6 you should be fine. Your PC will do well with GTA5.

Thanks, I actually didn't know that skyrim is CPU heavy. Crysis 2 and 3, too. I actually thought Crysis (orig) was still the most demanding of the crisis games so far. Thanks for the information.
