Install the maximum amount of memory that the motherboard supports.
Uninstall any software that you don't need.
Configure software you want to start on demand rather than starting with windows.
If it still isn't enough to meet your requirements, then it is time to upgrade your system.

I will assume you are using 32 bit XP. If so you will never have more than 4g installed available and of the 4g, 3.5 to 3.8 available (it has been a while for me and XP but these numbers are what I remember). So the first thing is to install the max 4 g. After that I suggest you use msconfig to see what is run at start up (look at the startup tab) and to see what services are started at boot (look at the services tab). If you can screen shot or list what is in those two tabs we might be able to suggest what can be changed to get some memory freed. However the real fix is to migrate to Win7 64 bit so you have a current OS that is still supported and can handle increased RAM.

Before you spend the $179 for Windows 7/8, and have tried but still all the solutions arent' helping, you should bring up Task Manager and see what programs are running (make sure to click the checkbox at the bottom of the panel) and see if there is a 'wierd' named program running taking up mem/cpus (like yyyshyy76726s.exe << would be malware or virus). If still none of this works, then consider a new desktop/laptop wiht a i3Core, 6-8GB RAM, 500GB+ Hard Drive, DVD, Windows 8, mouse keyboard and often a NEW LCD, is only >>>> $249 <<<<< . That is for basic computer use and perfectly under warranty for the next year, then hardware only warrantly for years 2/3.

yes, i'm using 32-bit XP SP3. i'm using no more than 1GB ram cuz its an old laptop (2005). i cant use more than that. and i dont like windows 7. i prefer windows 8 with touch screen. but thats when i'm able to. i only have 2 programs that start up at boot. as for services, i only got 13 services on auto and 2 on manual.

your suggestion for a new laptop with the specs u mentioned for $249 sounds good. where did u see this sell? btw, i'm looking to buy an i7 Core, 8GB ram, SSD, with no DVD with touchscreen windows 8 on 1080p laptop. hopefuly, a convertible like the sony flip '15 inch screen.

Yeah a 10 year old laptop isn't worth it. Personally I am opposite I detest W8 UNLESS you were to get an expensive touchpad screen like you're suggesting (those are very expensive). Also depends what you're trying to do with them, if your gaming, CAD, MAYA, 5000x5000 row column spreadsheets yeah a i7 will do. But if you're just typing in Word, search Google, check your Facebook, a simple i3 will do as much as a AMD CPU. Which drops the price down alot, but you still have to shop around for a touch screen enabled one.
