We have a HDD which was removed from an unknown one of about 140 computers on site and would like to determine which computer it was. Does Windows 7 store in the OS on the HDD the identity of the computer in which it was located?

Solution
If you install the drive in a computer and turn it on, you'll be able to look at the properties of "my computer" and see the name that the HDD was using in the old system. Also there will be user profiles created for the users that were using the computer.

"There is a computer name in the OS if that helps."

That was my question and yes it would help. Where is it located exactly?

re "turn them on?" guess I should have made clear the HDD was removed some time ago and all PC's are now running with new HDD's as necessary since then.
