i need help setting up my comp with a new hard drive

So i just got a new computer from a friend with a new hard drive but i dont think the hard drive is even working, im not the smartest person when comes to computers so i might be doing something wrong
And its a black screen saying something about booting something
God i need help

You would have to make certain you have the Windows Key handy in the event you need to reinstall it. Sound like you may have a corrupt file, thus not allowing for you to boot windows. As your friend what was the issue with is to you can troubleshoot it properly.

he said it just needs a new hard drive and that nothing was wrong with it. and i bought a new one (harddrive)

i know i have to have a operating system
i have windows 8 but i dont think its recognizing the hard drive or something. maybe im doing it wrong? my friend is setting it up not me so im not in front of it right now it keeps telling him to boot something and he has windows with him
