I ordered a CPU upgrade (fx8350) and a new SSD (Samsung 840 pro 128gb). Just got them in the mail today and neither of them work :(

I currently use a Phenom II X4 955BE at stock settings. No SSD currently.

My 970 Extreme 3 motherboard is the original series, NOT revision 2. I updated the BIOS to the newest version (1.08) before trying the FX8350. I also researched a lot and saw many people are using my motherboard and the fx8350 with no problems (after the bios update). After installing the FX8350 my PC doesnt post. Every light and fan comes on but nothing USB turns on, the monitor has no signal, and no beep happens. I then put my 955BE back on and everything worked fine.

Also the new SSD I got doesnt show up anywhere even though its plugged in.

Are there settings in the bios maybe that I'm overlooking to get the fx8350 to work?

I hate to think I got 2 bad items that I need to RMA at the same time. Ugh :/

Solution
maybe, just maybe the psu can't handle the new cpu. it draws more power compared to the phenom. you have any other smaller gpu to test with?

I understand its not on the list but I have read about many people who have this exact motherboard and CPU setup without any problems, after getting the newest bios update. I assume its a similar scenario how the memory compatibility lists don't always list every model of ram but more often than not they work anyway, in my experience at least.

I think I do... The 480 is actually my friends since my 560ti recently broke and is in the process of being RMAd. I think my sister has a low tier amd 8000 series card I can try.

If it is the CPU not playing nice with the mobo then it must be just a hit and miss kind of thing since, like I said, I have seen many people with this combo working fine for them. I'll try a low end GPU and see if it may be the PSU

The SSD worked in my sisters PC so i tried a different SATA port and cable on my computer and now it works fine. Must have been a bad port/cable.

I also switched out the GTX 480 for my sisters Geforce 8500, which requires no external power source, and now the computer boots up fine with the FX8350.

Sooooo good news is nothing was broken. My 650W PSU just cant handle the FX8350 and GTX 480 i guess. I can't wait to get my own video card back. This 480 is too power hungry

Thank you for all the help guys

I think the Extreme2 motherboard was specific to Canada and India only and not available to the rest of the world so is not listed, per se, on their site.

Could you confirm whether the model shown in the link is your motherboard?
