The wifi network is seen but cannot connect. I have used a ethernet cable to update the drivers but it says I have the lastest driver. Acer Aspire 5742 came with the upgrade to win 8. Windows 7 worked perfectly.

Is there any reason not to change the wireless auth settings on the 2wire 2701 to WPA-PSK?

I haven't found anything definitive in Microsoft's online docs, but apparently (based on several sources) WEP with shared-key authentication is deprecated in Windows 8 and simply won't work. See this post, for example. Again, I didn't find anything definitive, but apparently Windows 8 still supports WEP with open-key authentication (considered more secure than shared-key WEP). In any case, WEP is an older WiFi security standard and is widely considered broken. It may stop casual attempts to access your wireless...

Just for kicks, try this. From the Desktop screen, click the network icon in the Windows Taskbar notification area. Then right-click the wireless network in question and in the menu that appears, click Forget this network.

Click the network icon again, and try to connect to the wireless network. Assuming your wireless network is secured, you should see a prompt for your wireless network password (security key/code). Enter it! :)

Assuming you're using WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK wireless security, let's try this:

■Click the network icon in Windows' Taskbar notification area.
■Right-click the wireless network connection in question and click View connection properties.

■On the Security tab of the wireless network properties dialog, change Encryption type from whatever it is set to, to the only other option available (TKIP <-> AES).
    ■Click OK.

If that doesn't work please reply and let us know:

  • ■Your version/edition of Windows 8 (8 or 8.1) and Pro?
■Your wireless security settings (WEP, WPA-PSK [AES/TKIP], WPA2-PSK [AES/TKIP], etc.)? Check both router/access point and computer.
■Manufacturer (make) and model of your wireless router/access point.
■Have you tried rebooting your computer?
■Have you tried power-cycling your wireless router/access point?

Win 8.0 Pro
WEP
Router is 2wire 2701 HG-B
I have rebooted computer and power-cycled router.
Also installed router driver for Win 8.

In any case, WEP is an older WiFi security standard and is widely considered broken. It may stop casual attempts to access your wireless network, but is unlikely to be a significant challenge for anyone more determined.
All that said, this 2wire 2701 manual seems to suggest that the default WiFi security is WEP open-key. If for some reason yours is WEP shared-key, it would explain why you can't connect. In any case, I strongly recommend that you change the WiFi security settings to WPA-PSK or preferably WPA2-PSK. The manual doesn't mention WPA2, but if your router is newer or has updated firmware, it's possible that your router supports WPA2.

Hope that's helpful!
