I own an Asus Q500a. My hard drive crashed not too long ago. I purchased a new hard drive (lower storage, more speed).

My ASUS was a Windows 8 laptop. However, they do not send recovery disks anymore, and I do not have the time or patience to send it all the way to California, MAYBE have it replaced, and sent back. Therefore I plan on using my newly bought hard-drive.

My question is: I do not have a recovery disk for windows 8 (stupid of me, I know). However, I have access to a computer with Windows 7 and a laptop with Windows 8. Is it possible to acquire the OS of these computers and install it on my new hard drive via a disk? If so, what is the procedure?

Thank you PinchedNerve. I have the key under the laptop yes. I should be able to simply download the .iso and transfer it on a DVD and then boot it into my computer?

Only a few days after Windows 8 release, I found the Asus Q500A at Best Buy and it was the Hardware that my friend had been looking for so she asked me to get it for her.

Mistake!!

I should have known better to get a new release from Microsoft.

She suffered much anxiety from Windows 8 and complained regularly.

Yesterday I used an new hard drive and a new copy of Windows 7 and installed it on the Q500A.

Today, every thing is working perfectly.
It was a real Chore!

Drivers were the hard part, but DriverToolkit.com finally provided the driver that made my day.

You have to learn about UEFI, SecureBoot and the new "bios"

It can be done.
