I have an AMD based machine with a single MSI HD 6850, and though it has served me well, I need an upgrade to help smooth out these newer game's framerates, like AC4.

Price is not a huge issue as long as the improvement is worth it.
I was planning to get another HD6850 and crossfire it, but after a little research, have found the newer R9 270x Hawk Edition and R9 280x to probably be a smarter idea. I don't want to drop more than 500 bucks for the 290x.
I do not run multiple monitors and 1680x1050 is big enough for me.

Can anyone give me some advice on my best new card options, and any other cost effective change I could make to update my rig? I know my cpu is on the smaller side but I don't believe it could possibly become a bottle neck yet could it?

FX-4100 3.6ghz
MSI Radeon HD 6850
8gb Corsair Vengeance
M5A97 Mobo
Xtreme Gear power supply model: PSAZ-CP700
W7 64-bit
Cheap 1680x1050 hp monitor (needs to be replaced, suggestions welcomed)

rule of thumb is, three tiers up from your graphic card, and you'll fell the improvement..

so, at least any card from 7850 will give you significant performance boost..

but for your budget, you'll get something much much better than just 7850..

Your fine to upgrade, if there are any problems overclock your CPU and you might possibly get rid of any bottlenecks, 700W PSU is fine and monitor doesn't matter for upgrading but when you game then it does. The processor is nice and fairly decent you should be fine ;)
