AMD FX 8350 or i5 3570K for my gaming PC upgrade

Last response: in CPUs

I am struck between these two choices. I have a ATi HD 5770 card and want to upgrade my AMD 955 BE into one of these.

What I want the upgrade for:
Basically gaming, I run games which puts a lot of pressure on single core, so something which can handle that would be good. Basically MMOs.

What I need:
The CPU suggestion.
Motherboard to go with it.
And the SMPS Wattage (what's the minimum needed)

Some questions:
Is it necessary to overclock a CPU? I have never done it and I read on different forums you can get an i5 which cannot be overclocked for much cheaper. Will I need some additional cooling instead of stock for that? Do I have to overclock it as soon as I install it? Will it consume more power than non OCed?

Thanks.

The i5 is better for single core performance (up to 45% better - based on benchmarks) but I wouldn't go with the 3570k, I would go with the 4670k: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Graphics-BX80646I74770-Ge... and this cooler: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-120mm/d... - this cooler will allow you to get a mild oc of 4.0GHz.
Here is a good mobo for it: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-Motherboard-4thGenerat... - it is able to overclock your i5. But in my opinion it isn't worth it to overclock. But if you want to you can with that mobo, CPU and cooler. And if you are just using a 5770 then you will need no more than 500W to power those specs - but if you want to play the latest games on medium/high settings then I would recommend getting a better GPU as well. I would suggest this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-11199-16-20G-Graphics-... if your on a budget. But if you can afford it then get this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-Radeon-Edition-GDDR5-Graphi...

you'll need to upgrade your graphics as well. i5 and fx cpu is overkill for that 5770.

Overclocking is not necessary. Some people find it a hobby. Overclocking could decrease the life span of your parts and may not see a big difference in your games. But it also depends on how much you overclock. It will definitely consume more power.

But if you're interested , go for it.

Get a fx6300/6350 and invest more on the gpu. However, the i5 is better in gaming, better by a good margin but still 8350rocks.

Thanks for the replies, I am inclining more towards 4670k, any motherboards for it?

i7-4670K with a HD 5770 ? Now that's really unbalanced. The i5-3570k is good enough if you're learning how to overclock. But if you don't mind AMD, then the FX-6300 would be fine. the FX-8350 would have similar performance to the i5-3570k. You should really get a better GPU.

Asus Z87 PRO/MSI G-45(gaming)/MSI-GD65(gaming(costlier)/Asrock Z87 xtreme 4.
How much are you willing to spend?

@IRONBATMAN:
I always wanted an AMD card as they are way cheaper than intel. But, here I need something that can perform well on a single core. Out of all the replies I received on different forums people say intel over performs in terms of single core pressure. So, a processor which can do this is what I want.

Yes, intel beats out AMD in single-core performance. I see these synthetic benches that say 40% or whatever, but it doesn't seem to translate into gaming performance. You'll blow past 60 FPS in most games with a decent graphics card anyway.

For you, go with an FX 6300/8320 and a better graphics card, yours is dated. Something like a 7870 (Ghz)/R9 270 (x)/ 7870 XT/ 7950 / 280x / 7970. The GPU will give better gaming performance than a better CPU could, most modern processors are capable of handling games. Including that Phenom, it's still decent.

Yes, intel definitely beats AMD in single threading performance which is most used while gaming and that is why an i3-3220 is better in gaming than a fx4300. However, the fx6300 is a strong performer, don't underestimate it and the extra cores would be benificial in multitasking.

@JOOK-D: My friend can run BF4 on the same card on medium settings and gets decent FPS. I am not looking to run high end games just the casual MMOs on the card. I'll surely upgrade the card in a year or so. I just need to know if any of the CPU will create bottleck for the current card.

No, no way they will create bottleneck but would be an overkill.

Ah... MMOs! In that case the graphics card is not so important. I can run Lord of the Rings Online with an ATI 3450M from 2008.

But MMOs do need a good CPU, particularly when you are in a built-up or busy area. I'd go for the FX6300 or FX8320 and overclock.

Thanks for all the responses guys.
I have asked on the Guild wars 2 forums and everyone had better performance on intel CPU.
I am struck with another question, which one is value for money from these:
3570k, 4670k and 4570k also, a good cheap mobo to go with it.

Thanks again.

4670k would be the best since it's on the LGA 1150 socket, I believe, which will be used for at least 1 more CPU generation - so there's an upgrade path. So avoid the 3570k if you can.

And what do you define as a cheap mobo? Budget? :p

Intel is pretty much obligatory id you need single threaded performance/lots of performance per core or thread.

I would look at the 4670k.
For a GPU, the bottom line if you want good value is the HD 7850 or the GTX 650 Ti Boost.

grab the fx 8320 and get a better GPU. look at these benchmarks and see which one is more important, don't shoot yourself in the foot because you will kick your self later on, I also have fx 8350+r9-290 my uncle the same day my uncle bought i7-4770k+r9-280, we benched some games, It took us a week, it is worth looking at these benchmarks as well, we benched at 1080p
Metro last Light very high
fx 8350+r9-290= 68.5 fps
i7 4770k+ 280x= 51.8 fps
Bioshock Infinite ultra quality+ DDoF
fx 8350+r9-290= 91.6
i7 4770k+ 280x= 71.4
Battlefield 3 ultra quality+ 4xmsaa
fx 8350+r9-290= 87.4
i7 4770k+ 280x= 71.3
crysis 3 high+fxaa
fx 8350+r9-290= 78.4
i7 4770k+ 280x= 58.6
Bioshock Infinite ultra quality+DDoF
fx 8350+r9-290=91
i7 4770k+ 280x=73
Hitman Absoloution
fx 8350+r9-290=79.8
i7 4770k+ 280x=76.2
Grid 2 Maximum quality+ 4xmsaa
fx 8350+r9-290= 106.6
i7-4770k+280x= 91.7
So now what is it with you people i5 4670k+ 7850 or 650ti!? seriously!?

dor old or single threaded games yeah i5 4670k>fx 8350 currently and for moderately threaded games i5 4670=fx 8350, and in the near future fx 8350> i5 4670k, let's review these benchmarks here
http://www.techspot.com/review/591-medal-of-honor-warfi... (MOH warfighter fx 8350 performs as well as i7-3960x)
http://www.techspot.com/review/601-black-ops-2-performa... (call of duty black ops 2 fx 8350 performs as well as i7-3960x)
http://www.pcgameshardware.de/Crysis-3-PC-235317/Tests/... (crysis 3- fx 8350 better than i7 3770k and just below i7-3950x)
http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1598/pg6/amd-fx-8... (bf3 fx 8350>i5 3570k)
http://www.hardwarepal.com/batman-arkham-origins-benchm... (batman Arkham Origins fx 8350= i7 4770k after AMD's catalyst release)
http://www.hardwarepal.com/battlefield-4-benchmark-mp-c... ( battlefield 4 ultra HD FX 8350 equal to i7-4770k)
http://www.hardwarepal.com/battlefield-4-benchmark-mp-c... ( battlefield4 full HD the same scenario)
http://www.techspot.com/review/645-tomb-raider-performa... (Tomb raider 2013)
a lot of more incidents which shows these CPUs enjoy actually the same performance, in one game one beats the other, in the other game there is another scenario, but something is for sure, in crysis 3 for example i5-3570k uses 80% percent of it resources AMD fx 8350 just uses 60% in COD ghost i5 4670k uses 44% of its resources fx 8350 only uses 25%
in the future fx 8350> i5 4670k, wanna bet!? just look at these links
* where is the i5 in UBISOFT's system requirements!? http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=4546&ga... Ubisoft has confrimed that this game is heavily threaded, and has promised i5 owners can hit high sttings!! NO ULTRA SETTINGS
* When Capcom says its new engine takes full advantage of i7, which is good news for Capcom it really means it http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/132533/sponsored_...

@Darkresurrection: I mostly play MMOs and I don't care if it performs 100x better on FPS games. I just want MMO games bench in which intel outperforms.

@JOOK-D: Yea, I mean something that's a budget mobo, not very high end but something that can last.

for MMOs hand down intel is better, I agree, and you don't need to buy a better graphics card, so you want a mobo for 4670k!? you could go with http://www.amazon.com/Asus-Z87-PLUS-DDR3-1600-Motherboa... , it has a great price
