Hi.

I'm thinking about selling my 680SLI 2GB and replacing them with a 780Ti OC card. I play in 1920x1200 at 60Hz but will buy a 120Hz next year.

What do you guys think?

Well, I've tried to find benchmarks of 780Ti Overclocked vs stock 680SLI but they are hard to find.
The only comparison I've been able to do so far is Metro:LL which my current cards give about 66fps and the 780Ti OCd at 1150Mhz do 88fps.

The benefits I see is much quieter system, single GPU and more VRAM
Disadvantage would be lower performance in some cases and expensive deal

I would hope an OCed 780Ti would beat 690 but I suppose you are right.

Looks like I'm stuck with my cards for at least another year until Maxwell High End comes out :(

The 690 smokes all right now. The 780ti doesnt even give it competition but theb690 is a dual gpu. Basically two 680's on one pcb so I would absolutely keep the 680's. If you must uograde from what you have now wait for the next series from nvidia. Your 680sli is a very nice setup.

I went through a lot of benchmarks an it's true that stock 780Ti does not come close to the 690s performance BUT, an OCd 780Ti (1200 MHz) is equal to the 690 in performance and even beats it in some games (Metro:LL and Anno 2077). So in this case it's all about replacing and not upgrading or downgrading and well, this costs unnceccessary money. My option could of course be to buy this 780Ti now and then get another one this summer which potentially could beat the Maxwell high end card (if we look historically).

Thoughts on this?

I understand what you mean and my situation is a bit weird. I got enough power for now but probably not for one year ahead and I dont really have anything to upgrade to. When Maxwell is out my 680s wont be worth a damn thing (maybe €120 each tops) and as we all know nVidia the new GTX880 will probably cost €820 or something like that. So the price for upgrading in one year would be €600ish.

Buying the 780Ti now will cost me €150 and I'll probably buy one more in 7-8 months for maybe €550 is...€700 in total but should (according to history) beat the GTX880 when it's out.

I think you are just wanting to get something new to get something new. I've been there... If you just want something new and will admit it and are fine with spending the money then go for it. Otherwise wait for maxwell!!! It is illogical to buy a GPU now even though you get good performance because you are worried about future performance

@Welshstig
I heard the low/mid end cards will come first this time since the 20nm process is still being fine tuned. If it was confirmed that the GTX880 would be out in 3 months I would of course wait. But I wont wait for a GTX860 or something like that.

@thdarkshadow
That's exactly how I feel. It's fun to buy new stuff and the price for it (in this case) is not that bad considering my 680s still hold some value. But now I'm fully aware that it's not money well spent.

Ok, I'll make up my mind tomorrow.

Thanks for all the advice so far.

Hi Jupi. I was in the same position as you. I had a Zotac 780GTX. Bought June 2013 (upgrade from 680GTX) for £550. Then the 7880Ti was released. I decided to sell my Zotac 780GTX. It sold on ebay for only £315. I was furious. I lost £235 on a card only 6 months old and which had 5 years warranty!. I needed a new card. I saw on UK Amazon the Asus 7990HD reduced from £975 to £438. I snapped it up. Been using a month. Intial feelings were its a good card, but it gets too hot and forced my cpu, mb and overall temperatures up. My pc kept crashing. Also, AMD software/drivers were a total ball ache. I decided to send the 7990HD back to Amazon and I got a Palit 780Ti from Dabs for only £501.99 (free delivery and 3 years warranty). Got it yesterday and ran benchmarks. This is what I got:

Asus 7990HD Heaven 4 = Score 1621, FPS 64.3, minimum FPS 8.6, maximum FPS 157. CPU temps 51c, GPU temps 75c at 70% fan speed (I'm not sure why FPS dropped to 8.6).

Asus 7990HD Valley 1 = Score 2897, FPS 69.2, minimum FPS 26.6, maximum FPS 123.1. Extreme HD. CPU 55c, GPU 75c, mobo 40c at 70% fan speed.

Compare this to Heaven benchmark results for my Zotac 780GTX (also ultra settings):

Heaven 3 = Score 1519, FPS 60.3, minimum FPS 28.3, Maximum FPS 155 (I didn't have Valley 1 at the time, so didn't test).

Now compare my Zotac 780GTX results to my palit 780Ti -

Palit 780Ti - Heaven 4 score = 1343. FPS = 53.3. Minimum FPS = 9.9. Maximum FPS = 119.1

Palit 780Ti - Valley 1 score = 2325. FPS = 55.6. Minimum FPS = 8. Maximum FPS = 120.2

I am really shocked with the Palit results. I don't know why it is so low. I don't know if I should go back to the 7990HD or keep on using the 780Ti. All I know is that I truly regret selling my Zotac 780GTX. That was a damn good card. The Palit was made in China and I have read on Amazon reviews for SSD's that the ones made in China performed poorly when benchmarked.

The 7990HD has got potential but it was too much of a ball ache to use (overheating, games crashing, BSOD, etc). Also I was a bit disappointed by the 7990HD bench results as it beat the 780GTX by only 101 points. It should have accrued a lot more points. See my Amazon review -

BTW, I read yesterday on videocarz.com that the new Maxwell gpu will not give the same improved performance over kepler, as kepler did over Fermi. The Maxwell will only tweak and fine tune performance over kepler by a small amount. If this is true, then probably not worth getting Maxwell. Just get the 880GTX when it comes out, but I shudder to think of the price tag (£600+). As for me, I am going to try and find out why my Palit is scoring so low and try to fix it. Benchmarks are poor but when I run games like crisis 2, Mass Effect 2 & 3, it gives good FPS (60/62 - same as 7990HD). In Crysis 3, it gives 45-47 FPS (ultra settings). Bear in mind my 780GTX gave 32-35 FPS in Crysis 3 (ultra settings) and my 7990HD gave 60FPS (also ultra settings). Temps for 780Ti much better than 7990HD. Idle = 33c. Load = 68c-73c depending on game, but cools down quickly after quitting game (whereas 7990HD would remain hot for long time).

The 780ti is actually not very far behind the 690 as a single card. The biggest advantage to moving to a single 780ti would be that you could add in a second 780ti a few months from now and absolutely crush your previous build.
