Hi. First I was browsing the internet using Windows 7, then my laptop suddenly shut down. I thought it was because the battery charge ran out, but it was weird because usually there's a notification when it's at 10% or 7%. So yeah, okay, I plugged it in, turned it on, typed my password, then here comes the Welcome page with the little swirling circle on it. I waited for around ten minutes, got pissed, pushed the power button and pushed it again to restart it, but the same thing happened.

This time, I ran it on safe mode with networking. It worked and I browsed the internet for awhile, then I restarted it again. This time, normally. So blah blah I typed my password and I finally made it to the desktop. The problem was I couldn't click on anything. Task manager shortcuts weren't working (ctrl-alt-del and ctrl-shift-esc),so I didn't know what was causing the problem. I tried to open my antivirus (ESET NOD32), but it seemed like nothing was happening because it's running so slowly.

So I restarted it again via power button, ran safe mode and did a bunch of stuff. I modified my startup programs, tried to run an ESET NOD32 scan but I'm not sure if it was really scanning because the usual interface can't work in safe mode, ran some diagnostic tests, like memory and hard disk tests (those tests you can do at black screen startup), and tried to run a system restore but unfortunately, there were no restore points. Annoying and weird.

Right now, I'm using ubuntu and it's fine, but I really need my windows programs. Is this a virus or something?

If you can get into safemode, try scanning with other anti virus/malware software such as mbam/spybot (download if needed), as well as letting your current antivirus complete its scanning - overnight if slow.
