PC uses onboard graphics instead of my GPU

I recently bought a computer and installed a new GPU into it, i have been playing games on it with no issues for about two weeks now.

I left my computer on today and came back to it a while later and i presumed it was just on the screen saver however after attempting to wake it the nothing happened.
So i restarted it and got a black screen, i tried plugging my VGA into the on-board graphics and it started working.

I checked device manager and my graphics card isn't displayed there (only my onboard graphics)
I have attempted to disable on board graphics on the PC but there isn't an outright option i can find to do this, also my primary graphics boot option is set to PCI-E.
The fans on the card spin when i turn the PC on but other than that the card doesn't seem to be functioning.

I am thinking the card is dead but i am hoping it isn't as i have no idea why this would happen.

PC Specs:
AMD Bulldozer FX 6100 3.3Ghz Six Core Processor
AMD / ATi HD3000 Integrated Graphics With Shared Graphics Memory
MSI 760GM-P21-(FX) uATX Motherboard
XFX HD 7870 DD Edition
650w PSU

For anyone with this problem in the future...

The adapter i was using for the graphics card had burnt without my knowing (molex to 6 pin adapter). The wire wasn't connected properly to one of the molex so my guess is it tried to push all the power down one and got burnt out.

Bought a new one and everything is running fine.
