Intel Core2 Quad Processor Q9400 vs AMD Dual-Core Processor E-350

So a buddy of mine is looking at this desktop PC, but we're not sure if it's really any better than his laptop. The individual didn't have the GPU information on hand immediately, but we know the CPU is a liquid cooled intel core2 etc, you read the title. Anyway, his laptop has the latter of the two listed in the title. How do the two compare? Do they compare?

The Core 2 quad will perform better but it will also use more power than the E350 which means worser battery life.
The E-350 will perform worse but will have better battery life.

Choose one out of the two dependent on what he does.

Well, the Q4000 is actually in a desktop, so battery consumption is entirely irrelevant. We're looking purely at power. He plays and streams video games, just for a power level reference.

Well the situation is the same, the Core 2 Quad will use more power overall then the E-350 and it will perform better.

And what do you mean by 'streams video games'?

Meaning he uses a capture card to play them with commentary for an audience. Having said that, his current laptop can handle that, so if you say that the core 2 is more powerful, it will be able to.

No problem but if he is looking to upgrade to a better machine, tell him to look for either an intel i3 , an AMD A8.

core 2 quad Q9400 is superior, is way out of E-350 league. e-350 it's just a very low end dual-core for laptops. cheapest you can buy. I think he has a dedicated gpu for that core 2 quad.

Well, the situation is more complicated than I let on. He has the option of trading a specific item for a specific desktop, or upgrading the ram he already has in his laptop. Basically we're to assume that these two are the only option.

The quad has roughly the same processing power as an i3 3___ series so with a decent gpu will play almost anything on the market well and everything on the market reasonably.

If the laptop has 2 gig of ram in it, thats about it. A dual core amd chip is very weak, only for general pc tasks.

The Core 2 Quad is absolutely faster than that AMD E350.

AMD E 350 - Score 763 = http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+E-350

So ... A lot faster.

The AMD E-350 is a CPU meant for netbooks / real inexpensive laptop. Performance compared to a Q9400 CPU from 2008 the E-350 would be abysmal.
