Hello there
I recently installed 50m of cat6 cable from my adsl modem from my flat to another flat in the same building. My laptop which detected 10/100/1000 worked really fine on the cable at the other end. But when my friend tried using his old laptop it was not detecting the cable. I also tried plugging in a dlink dir 605l router to the cable (its ethernet port is 10/100) but even the router does not detect the cable. is there any way i can make router detect the cat6 cable?

Check the adapters and the router to insure that they are working properly. The problem may well just be old poor quality adapters.

i do not understand what you mean by adapters, sorry...and well as for the router its a brand new one...i bought it since i thought the laptop ethernet port might not be working while it still has functional wifi... could it be that the cable only relays 1000mbps signal which cannot be picked up by the 10/100 port? if so can i change the connector pins at the end of the cat6 cable to have 2 pairs pins to make them work?
forgive me if i'm not making sense...

The Ethernet ports at each end of the cable must be functioning to use the cable.

And it is possible that you bought the wrong cable -- you need a patch cable and not a crossover. I would test the cable with two known working devices to see if the cable is working.
