Okay so I don't know exactly how to go about this question but here it goes, I have AT&T DSL Internet service and I have Netgear router connected to a 2Wire Modem/Router combo and I use Wi-Fi off of the Netgear Router and wireless disabled on the 2Wire Modem/Router. My question is which one acts as the hardware firewall(Netgear Router or the 2Wire)? Also which firewall would provide the most security to my wireless network?

REPOSTED BECAUSE IDK HOW TO MARK UNSOLVED

Firewall is mostly not needed in you standard home network. When you run NAT without port forwarding any attack that is coming from the internet is never forwarded though to the internal machines. So NAT pretty much is a brute force form of a firewall rule that says only session that are established from the inside network are allowed.

A firewall can also prevent certain traffic from your internal machines from going to the internet. This would prevent your machines if they got infected from attacking other machines.

This is pretty much all a firewall built into a router can do. True firewalls will also allow you to filter traffic between machine in the lan such as between wireless users and between wireless and lan users. Consumer router only apply rules for traffic that crosses from lan-wan.

Besides you wireless network is almost as secure as the wired network if you use proper encryption on it.

So which machine is acting as the hardware firewall the way I got it set up? The 2Wire or Netgear?
