First build. Everything seems to be working but no signal on monitor?

I recently made my first build, and connected the video card to my monitor with HDMI. The monitor does not detect a signal. All the fans spin and the light on my motherboard lights up green. have you tried taking out the video card and plugging monitor into motherboard video output?
