Dell Laptop won't boot

I have a Dell inspiron 1525 laptop that's out of warranty and won't boot.l It starts, displays the dell logo, then dies - black screen with flashing cursor at upper left. It passes pre-POST diagnostics, has a new battery. I've done an fdsk; hard drive's okay. OS is Vista Home Premium. Any ideas out there, besides junking it?

To access safe mode I have to first access advance boot menu via F8. I've tried that, but F8 does nothing. Thanks anyway! Any other ideas? Phil

Black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left is a driver problem, what you can do is reinstall Vista on your system.

Thanks. I don't have the Vista CD, but will look into repair/update drivers without booting. Any suggestions anyone?

Another problem could be the HDD, you said it's alright physically. But you could have a driver who could not be loaded by Windows and you need to reinstall Vista.

Since I don't have the Vista CD, just suppose I bought a Windows 7 CD. Could I install it over Vista and have a working computer? Thanks.
