I have been gifted a E5-4650 cpu, and am looking at building a new system, but have not been able to find any hard proof of a motherboard that is compatible with it. So, i leave it up to you my TH kin. There are some things i'm looking for in it though, as any techie always has some limiters. So, here they are:

Must have:

- minimum 2x PCI-E 3.0 x16 lanes for a SLI (2x 770's)(full x16 lanes for both GPU's)
- SATA III (6 Gb/s) (minimum 2 ports)
- USB 3.0 support

Fire away with your answers!

tennispro602 and IanRowlings,

A Xeon E5-4650 is an excellent 8-core / 16 thread, 2.7 / 3.3GHz that can be used in up to 4 CPU systems. It's also a generous gift- retail about $3,800.

After the shock of the price, there's nothing too magical about a motherboard for it as it's an LGA2011 Socket R, using 130W. Here's a list of compatible ones:

http://www.game-debate.com/hardware/index.php?pid=1186&moboList=Xeon%20E5-4650

The choice depends on how CPU's you'll have. If it's going solo, I'd recommend the Asus Rampage IV Black- fast X79 chipset, 8 RAM slots (64GB max up to 2400 speed), plenty of slots suitable for 4-way SLI, and 6X SATA 3.0. I see this motherboard at the top of the Passmark's Top 100 systems. If this is for a workstation and you're using ECC RAM, then I suggest the Asus P9X79-E WS, also a fast X79, with 7X PCIe of I think 5 are x16 slots, though not all will run at x16 simultaneously. If you are intending a workstation use requiring more than 64GB RAM, then you'll want a C602 chipset. The site linked is game-oriented so a bit more research,..

Quite a few choices, but to do that CPU justice, a very high performance motherboard will let it stretch it's legs.

I for one, would be very interested to know how it works out. The 4000 series Xeons are not usually found in a home PC situation. Btw, the step up from these are the Xeon E7- 8000 series and you can use 8 at a time at up to $5,000 each.

Cheers,

BambiBoom

Hi
Thanks very much for the advice. I was considering the Asus Rampage IV Extreme mobo and, based on what you say, I gather this would be fine.
I will also be using 32Gb of 1333MHz RAM, only because I have a very nice friend who can also provide this free.
The only thing I now need to sort out is what heatstink/fan to use. I understand some of these are so large that they will only allow for low profile RAM. I'll need to check this out.
Thanks again for the advice. If/when I get it together I'll let you know hoe it goes.
Ian

I have not had any successful replies. Since I was needing to get it done as soon as possible, I found a i7-4770k with mobo to be sufficient enough. I still have my cpu, but no mobo to go with it. Been looking for any takers, as it's still in the cpu boxing

Just to let you know ASRock X79 motherboards are compatible with the Intel Xeon E5-4650. I have just bought the Extreme9 board and it recognised the CPU without a problem. None of the Asus or Gigabyte boards are compatible.
The only problem with the new setup is that, although the BIOS recognised the SATA drives, it does not see the SSD. As this contains the OS it is a problem I still new to resolve.

No problems with the motherboard and CPU. It only required to configure the BIOS correctly and everything is OK including the SSD drive.
In fact, the system goes like $*%#

IanRowlings,

I'm very pleased to hear that the E5-4650, ASRock Extreme 9, and SSD are all working together and so happily like "$*%#" ! It's interesting that the ASUS and Gigabyte boards listed on the game-debate site would not work.

It appears you've found an excellent solution for your system. Well done.

Cheers,
