Solution
I would go for the GTX 780. It runs cooler (aka higher overclocking and better efficiency) and uses less electricity.

Reasoning:

You don't need 4Gb of memory unless you're gaming on ultra with multiple monitors
Pixel rate and raw power isn't useful unless it can be processed
Games don't use a lot of memory bus
Games don't need a lot of shading units unless it is on multiple monitors

Conclusion:
Multiple monitors and/or extreme gaming: R9 290
Better efficiency and better reliability: GTX 780

While nuke is right for now, once aftermarket 290's come out they will be better. The 290 only puts out 50 watts more than the 780 max. In fact, a golden 290 will beat a golden 780 (1300 on the 290 and 1300 on the 780) in every way. The 4GB vram is debatable. If you need one now the 780 is the BEST choice, if you wait the 290 will pay off.

1. :D I've been waiting forever for someone to call me "nuke"
2. I totally agree, but AMD makes their GPU's run ~80C, which does not allow any OC'ing right now, until new coolers come out or if you totally watercool your system.
