A family member is buying me an EVGA 500B power supply for the holidays because originally i was going to buy a EVGA 760, EVGA informed me that I'd be able to run that card without any issues however now I have an extra $70 to spend on a graphics card, the EVGA 770 is in my price range. Minimum requirements in an average* system are 600w 42amps on the 12v rail, my thinking is since my system runs a little lower on power according to Pcpartpicker and eXtreme that i'd be able to somehow get around this 2amp. Asking for a diffrent power supply is out of the question, I'd feel horrible inside.

Is there anything I can do? remove a RAM stick, set maximum processor state to 85% , anything. Im using about 200w without a graphics card

Solution
According to PC partpicker im only using ~200w, the 770 will use ~240w at peak during a benchmark and I only have 425w continuous. I can understand not reaching 400w during a simple game like WoW or league of legends , when I get the 770 it will remove the bottlenecks and my CPU will only run at like 40-50% . Im just wondering what would cause it to go peak and if theres anyhting i can do to prevent it

I wouldnt do it, you'll run into all sorts of issues with an underpowered system, i wouldnt even consider it personally. You can ruin about any part of your rig if u try. Only parts you have that draw many watts are cpu/gpu/mobo/hd when spinning full tilt. Memory and other items dont use enough to bother

Look at the Furmark load in the link I posted it brings the GPU to absolute MAX!
