Hi there,

This forum isn't unfamiliar to me, but this is the first time I create a thread/ ask a question on this forum. I believe people here are very knowledgeable and helpful, because I see that when I was reading threads on this forum earlier :D. Hopefully you can help me out on this problem.

My Rig:
Asus P8Z68 V LE, PCIe 2.0 x1
i7 2600 @3.4MHz
16G @1333MHz
GTX 780 @889MHz
PSU 850W
Games: FF XIV and uniengine:heaven installed on raid0(with SMRT), skyrim on Hyper X 120G
Nvidia Driver: 331.82

- the memory info is apparently incorrect, idk why though.

Brief------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, here's the problem I encountered. I have an Asus GTX 780 Direct CUII, no overclock. Recently, maybe one/two week ago, I started to have problems with the gpu usage. It was 99% or so before I had had any problems, but now it drops to less than 70%, consequently drops in fps. I currently play final fantasy xiv and elder scrol V skyrim.

Detailed descriptions------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • [.]When playing FFXIV, I noticed whenever I'm in an open area, the fps drops below 60 and in crowded areas, the fps drops below 30 or even lower, but if I'm in dungeon, the fps is perfect.[/.]
[.]When playing skyrim, my fps is constantly between 40 and 42, it almost stays at 41 all the time!![/.]

And during all these scenarios with low fps issues, the GPU usage is capped around 65% - it barely goes above it.

I also ran a test with uniengine heaven 4.0 and the card scored 1200; details can be found in the picture I attached below.During the benchmarking, the gpu usage was ok, 99% or 100% and the framebuffer was around 60%, power at 70-80% I believe, memory usage around 1200MB and others, such as voltage, gpu/memory clocks etc are capped at full.

More detailed information about the FPS/GPU/CPU that I tested can be found below:

Some thoughts------------------------------------------------------------------------

It appears to me that whenever the thread cpu usage is capped at 12%, the gpu usage is capped. The high fps at low gpu usage in ffxiv dungeon is probably because there aren't many objects being calculated in gpu.

I have done a lot of online researches before I started this thread and it seems 90% of the arguments point to the CPU bottleneck. Does it really means there is a bottleneck on my i7 2600? How is it possible that I haven't got this problem until recently? Could it be the nvidia driver? - because I remember I upgraded my driver, but I don't think the gpu usage problem occurred on the same date that I installed that driver. Also, I didn't change any hardware within the latest 2 months. Is it possible that my PCIe isn't working properly?

One recent discovery------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additionally, just discovered during playing skyrim that every time my camera pointed at one particular spot and only that spot (shown in screenshot below), the gpu usage dramatically droped to 5% or so and the fps becomes 1 or 2...

There were far more complicated objects around there such as boats/water/npc etc, but the fps looked "normal".

Unfortunately, I forgot to check the CPU usage etc.

Well there could be more such spot that could significantly decrease gpu usage because I remember during the game play, I had a few sudden fps drop and that could be caused by the same mechanism.

CPU bottlenecking? Maybe NOT!------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have also found a youtube video that may argue that this isn't the problem with my cpu. In the video, the person is running skyrim @ 3840x2160 with extreme graphic settings I believe and his fps was 45 the lowest while not recording!! The specification of his gaming station is in the video description:

GPU: EVGA GTX 780 3 GB
CPU: 2500K 4.8 Ghz
MB: MSI P67A-G43 (B3)
Ram: 8 GB G.SKILL Sniper Series

His rig is apparently lower configured than mine, but he's getting higher fps at 3.6x higher resolution than mine??
The video is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaegmveXoxw

Please help------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please I really need help. Please advice me something, anything. I don't have a clue how I can fix this or what I should check or what I should replace at this moment.

Kind Regards,
Anthony

that score for heaven bench is decent especially as your running 8xaa.
you really dont need more than 4xaa on a 1920/1080 monitor. you really wont be able to tell the difference other than lower frame rates.
if you reduce the aa your cpu usage will likely jump up as the performance will balance back from being gpu bound due to to much aa being used.

Thank you for offering your help.

I tried both physX settings (gpu/cpu), unfortunately neither worked. I will try disabling the onboard graphic, although I can hardly believe that is causing the trouble, since I have had it on for over a year. But thanks for the suggestion, I'm going to try everything now xD.

I just checked temperatures in skyrim, both temperatures look good. gpu temperature is as cool as 45 degree C, while cpu was at 43.

Thank you again for replying :).

Did you force graphics settings using the nvidia control panel?

No, I use skyrim launcher/ffxiv ingame graphic settings. For physX setting, yes I did.

Thank you for replying and offering help.

I have tried the lowest graphic settings on ffxiv and in crowded area, the fps was still below 60, around 45 if I'm not wrong :(. I haven't tried that on skyrim, but I persume the lowest setting would greatly improve the performance. However, it is not a fix to the problem, because with i7 2600 it should not bottleneck the card. I believe there are problems with either hardware or software. The video uploaded by a skyrim player, who is playing on his i7 2500k + gtx 780 at 4k resolution, can still achieve a minimum fps of 45...

I have disabled the onboard graphics. gpu usage is still low as well as fps.

I tried four different drivers (331.65, 331.58, 331.40 and 326.80), all clean reinstalled, no improvement at all.:(

Thank you guys. Looking for more suggestions :D

I have the same problem. I have a Amd 4130, 8gb 1333 ram, crucial 256gb ssd and a Gainward gtx 780 that i cant overclock without BF4 crashing. When i play BF4 i get 30-40fps tops @ low, i have done clean reinstalls of nvidia drivers. What else can i do?
