Hello, my current laptop has an up-to-date Win 7 Pro 32-bit OS and a 128GB SSD which is too small. So I intend to replace it with a larger one (240GB, Crucial) which will arrive shortly. I have a USB backup drive using Paragon Hard Disk Manager with a full image on it. How should I proceed? Thanks for any advice!

Solution
I use Acronis so if Paragon works the same (probably does)........

- Through Paragon, you'll need to create a bootable rescue system on Paragon's allowable media e.g. CD/DVD/USB memory stick/etc.
- If you are happy with your current backup image, power down the system & disconnect power lead. Remove old SSD, replace new SSD, insert your bootable Paragon rescue media then Boot into this (you might need to alter the BIOS boot order).
- You'll then restore your old image via the rescue software onto the new SSD.
- Boot up and hopefully all should be ok.

The whole process is fairly rapid - the only slowish bit is the restore phase (especially if you have high compression on your image).

I recently did something like this when I secure...

I recently did something like this when I secure erased my current OS PCIe SSD to restore its performance.

mesab66,

Thank you so much! I am finishing my backup as we speak, no compression for best speed, then (tomorrow) I'll create my bootable Win 7 OS USB flash drive using Paragon's tool--I know there is one in the software. Then I'll follow the steps you recommended and report back. There are many similar answers for related questions, but they never just answer the simple question, "Switching my hard drive on Win 7 laptop, what to do?" But you just did. Thanks again!

No probs.
Just as a check, when you create Paragon's rescue disc/media (this will contain only Paragon's rescue software - your old SSH C: will be in the image file you made), try booting into it to make sure all is ok. If you need to change the boot order in the BIOS this is where you'll find out.

If everything checks out, power down and swap SSD's, etc. as detailed above.

Since you will still have your old SSD you can always swap it back if needed.
