yes you can but most modern card's will be bottlenecked by it. still radeon HD 6570/7730 are good option's and dont require aux. power connectors.

I have two suggestions, The first; Assuming you have a SATA HDD and optical, and a retail copy of windows, you can get 4 core APU platform that would give you a stronger system across the board.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD A6-3670K 2.7GHz Quad-Core Processor ($76.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock A55M-VS Micro ATX FM1 Motherboard ($48.38 @ Newegg)
Memory: A-Data XPG Gaming Series 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $155.35
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)
(Generated by PCPartPicker 2013-12-08 08:17 EST-0500)

The second suggestion is to get as strong of a video card as you possibly can, You'll probably need a new PSU (500w on a well-built PSU would be plenty).

XFX Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card ($119.99 @ Newegg)

or, pushing the budget,

Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB Video Card ($160.66 @ Newegg)

and then, save up for a stronger processor and another 2gb of RAM. You will have to buy one used, since LGA 775 chips are no longer available at retail, but your motherboard supports the entire 775 line.

Look for something around a Core2 quad 9650 (~$150 on ebay). Those are still very strong CPU's, even in relation to current gen. The 9650 is roughly equivalent to an I5-3220T or an. FX 8120.

Between the core2 quad, the 7850/660 and 4gb RAM you would have a pretty beefy system.

This build is at least 5 years old, I have to wonder if the power supply can handle the extra load. I think your headed down a rabbit hole you don't want to go down.

A good rule of thumb, if the build is more than three years old, don't waste the money. It is probably cheaper in the long run to invest in a new build.

That's not a good rule of thumb...especially not anymore. Both the AM3 platform and Sandy bridge are 3 years old. I won't be telling anyone to toss their 2500k anytime soon.

*the Q9550's are a better deal, $100 on ebay and only a hair slower than the 9650

For $250, he can make a system that can not only play all modern games, but play them at high settings on his "old" platform. If he's using anything less than a 1920x1080 monitor, that rig will be able to max nearly every game in existence. Even at full 1920x1080, it will comfortably play everything at medium settings.

Memory: Crucial 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-800 Memory ($21.69 @ Amazon)
Video Card: XFX Radeon HD 7850 2GB Video Card ($119.99 @ Newegg)
