Onboard alc887 audio, is it worth buying a xonar dgx to improve the audio quality for my hd558s?

Title.
I am not entirely sure whether or not I should buy a sound card, but seeing as I do own pretty reasonable headphones, I am wondering whether or not I would notice much difference be it in music or in games.

Thank you.

The short answer for games is NO yes if your headphones is hard driven (the volume is suspicicly low). For Music yes IF you use enhancement. Otherwise no the little gain you get is not worth the money.

I bought an Asus Xonar DG ($35) to replace my motherboard audio, and it was a pretty large improvement. keep in mind though, my speakers were $100 when I bought them, so probably upper-end. And my motherboard was $50, so it probably had terrible audio to begin with.

Usually replacing speakers will net a bigger increase than getting a sound card, unless you already have good speakers/headphones and poor integrated audio.

My case is the same as Rationale, I have a somewat expensive sound system hence it where worth the sound card upgrade for me. And my headphones dont like weak volumes so i needed something with headphone amplification. Integrated audio is enough for standard to mid equipment. Its the better snr values and features people pay money for when buying soundcards. You`re better of starting to invest in better sound system and headphones before you uppgrade your soundcard.
