Everyone has been telling me to overclock my i5-760, because it's a very capable CPU and with overclocking becomes even better. Now I know the very basics when it comes to overclocking. I know that you need a good fan to keep the temperatures low. I have a stock fan, until now never overheated with the current CPU settings. Basically I want to reach the highest overclocking setting possible without burning my PC. Please help
Okay, so the two factors in producing a stable overclock are Temperature and Voltage.
The first is a simple problem. If it's hot, turn up the cooling! (So either turn up fan speeds, de-dust everything [which you should do anyway
], get a newer, better fan and heatsink or get a water cooling solution). If it gets TOO hot for your cooling to keep up (For you, too hot would be anything over 70 Celsius. The sweet spot is 60-65C. You want it as cool as possible to ensure a long and happy life for your CPU) then you have to scale back the overclock.
Now overvolting is a much more dangerous beast. You can easily mess up by giving your components too much juice. I recommend you read through
this guide. It's a lot to go through, but it's VERY useful stuff.
Things to remember:
Overclocking/Overvolting uses more power, make sure your PSU can keep up!
Overclocking/Overvolting generates more heat. Make sure your cooling solution keeps the temps under 70C!
