I am about to purchase a new PC, and it says that it has an "on board network card". Being a bit of a computer noob, I was wondering if I would be able to connect wirelessly to my router.

you need a wireless adaptor, usually they are usb sticks altough there are wireless pci cards too but usb is usually better if they have an extension cable so you can have the antenna over your desk for better transmition.

If your router has the same standards as the wireless adaptor, yes, check the router manual
What you are looking for is: IEEE 802.11n, IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11b, if it is just IEEE 802.11g, IEEE 802.11b it means the router only has 56k speed but the adaptor will be fine
