Hi, I have a Dell C840 with winXPpro, 32bit, 1.5gb RAM, and a pentium4 2.00ghz CPU. The motherboard is named thru numerous software applications as only: dell latitude c840. I have a spare laptop that is not being used sporting a pentium4 2.80ghz CPU. Both are shown to use a 478pin socket on intels website, so I'm wondering if they are interchangeable, and if so would it be a wise upgrade. (I'd hate to waste the time swapping just to find out the 2.00 was a better CPU) if anyone knows a little about these notebooks and CPUs any info would be greatly appreciated, thx

I too did a little research but have questioned a lot of the answers, some state they can handle a 2.6, some state they are capable of 2.8.. Some say that the 2.4 was faster etc.. All are dependent on the bios update so that too poses a question of which bios was available at the time they posted compatible CPU info.. If new bios updates have come out since/ does that allow for newer or better CPU interchange..? I am currently on a13 BIOS which according to dell.com was the recommended update. I just don't know enough about the processors to confirm if all 478pin intel pentium (4) series are interchangeable or not. I'd love to gain a little more speed naturally, and better utilize RAM availability, but definitely don't want to brick a MOBO by installing the wrong processor lol

You wouldn't brick the mobo if it isn't compatible, it wouldn't be able to turn on and it might throw a couple of beeps out.....
There is no mobile pentium 4 that is 2.8GHz, there is a desktop pentium 4 @ 2.8GHz but i would think that the mobile and desktop PGA478 sockets are slightly different pinout wise.
