Hello all,

My friend got me 8gb (2 4gb sticks) of RAM recently as a gift. when i remove the old RAM and put in the new sticks, my computer won't boot to windows. It gives me a blue screen telling me that it does not want to risk any damages and will not start.

My motherboard is an Acer aspire M3910 desktop. the RAM he got me is gskill ripjawsx (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428).

Neither he nor i know much about this stuff, but from looking at crucial.com (and other posts from this website) i THINK it's compatible. I'm not sure though and im even less sure of how to get it to work. So is the RAM not compatible or am i installing it incorrectly?

First time post, any help would be appreciated! Any more info i could give let me know!

Hello... the Acer brand has been around along time... and there has been Packard Bell (Hell)... Gateway's... HP's... the Low Cost Total package solutions... I have worked, cursed, upgraded and fustrated on a many of them... There is a reason they are so Low Cost, and one reason is because of Minimized, reduced programed BIO's... your Journey for knowledge on your machine, will have information deep in searches, dead ends, and hours with Online Help.

To Vilsi and Ironsounds:

Thanks, i tried your advice. I put the 2 new sticks of RAM in and checked the BIOS. The computer correctly recognized 8 gbs of memory. However it still did not get to windows, giving the same "A problem was detected and windows shut down to prevent further damage to you computer" error.

The ram slots are labeled 1-4 and i tried multiple combinations of the two sticks in different slots. I thought putting them in 1 and 2 would work but it did not. I also tried putting only 1 stick in the first slot but this caused my computer to error out and restart over and over without ever getting to windows.

any other suggestions?

Have you also checked the frequency, timings, and volatges of the memory in the bios to make sure they match the specs of your new ram?

The frequency, timing and voltage for the new gskill ram sticks are:
DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Timing 9-9-9-24
Cas Latency 9
Voltage 1.5V

Using CPUz my memory is set up like:

Chipset
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Northbridge Intel Havendale/Clarkdale Host Bridge rev. 18
Southbridge Intel H57 rev. 06
Graphic Interface PCI-Express
PCI-E Link Width x16
PCI-E Max Link Width x16
Memory Type DDR3
Memory Size 2 GBytes
Channels Single
Memory Frequency 665.0 MHz (4:20)
CAS# latency (CL) 9.0
RAS# to CAS# delay (tRCD) 9
RAS# Precharge (tRP) 9
Cycle Time (tRAS) 24
Row Refresh Cycle Time (tRFC) 108
Command Rate (CR) 1T
Uncore Frequency 2128.0 MHz
MCHBAR I/O Base address 0x0FED14000
MCHBAR I/O Size 4096

Max bandwidth PC3-10700 (667 MHz)
Part number ACR256X64D3U13C9G
Serial number 3F1A3C80
Manufacturing date Week 41/Year 11
Number of banks 8
Nominal Voltage 1.50 Volts
EPP no
XMP no
AMP no
JEDEC timings table CL-tRCD-tRP-tRAS-tRC @ frequency
JEDEC #1 5.0-5-5-14-19 @ 380 MHz
JEDEC #2 6.0-6-6-17-23 @ 457 MHz
JEDEC #3 7.0-7-7-20-27 @ 533 MHz
JEDEC #4 8.0-8-8-22-30 @ 609 MHz
JEDEC #5 9.0-9-9-25-34 @ 685 MHz

I can't find anywhere in BIOS to change the frequency or voltage or timing, does it look wrong? Do i have to specifically set it up to be dual channel somewhere? my computer was a premade if that matters.

To Vilsi and Ironsounds, I cannot start in safe mode with the new ram in. it still gives me a blue screen error. I dont think my computer came with a Windows disc i will try and look for it though.

In my BIOS the only setting i can find that seems to be related is in the "frequency and voltage" menu. The option is "clock to all DIMM/PCI/PCIE" and it is disabled by default. From CPUz i have American Megatrends Inc. bios version P01-A4.

If there are more options in the BIOS i do not see them. Is my BIOS locked or something?

Enabling Dimm clock didn't open more options, nor did it solve the boot problem. My ram slots have numbers not colors:
1
3
2
4

I've tried every combination hoping i would get lucky but no matter where i put the 2 sticks it does not boot to windows. sometimes i get the blue screen error, sometimes i get a repeating loop of restarts.

Tonight/tomorrow i will post the exact wording of the error message.

Would flashing my bios do anything? i hear its risky to flash the bios and i dont really want to but if it might help i would try it.
