I have an old PS3 with a damaged PSU. I took the HDD out, and kept it in my closet for a few months. I finally decided to use it in my HP 2000 laptop. I'm planning on putting Elementary OS Luna on it. So here's the problem I'm afraid of. I was messing with my PS3 and decided to put it in and hold the disk button so the fan kicks on at full blast. I didn't realize it was still plugged in and the power switch was on, so I took out the hard drive, and sparks flew out of the motherboard's SATA port. I haven't touched the PS3 since. Anyway, I'm wondering if it's fried, or will do something bad to my SATA cable or motherboard.I can't see any scorching and I didn't smell smoke when it sparked.

Please tell me if I can use the HDD.

sparks most likely would only fly across the power connector, most likely from the 12V lines as the motor was spinning (and those don't like to be unplugged when active). heck, you've probably seen sparks in DC motors on RC-cars - same basic idea.

anyhoo, plug in ONLY the power connector and see if the thing spins up smoothly, and if that looks OK then plug in the SATA data connector (the smaller one), and go into disk management and bring it online.

The bad thing is that my notebook has both on one plug. But, this problem is solved. I'll replace Windows.
