Just got an Asus RT-N56u to replace the default router my ISP gave me. Only think is that the router doesn't detect a connection from the cable (rj11) which is plugged into the wall. Should I just need a rj11 to 45 cable to remedy this situation? The rj11 to 11 doesn't snap in correctly to the new router and also gets stuck which is a pain to take out.

Solution
It is just a normal ethernet cable. The only special thing you want to do is change the ISP router/modem to only run a modem. You can if you want run the ISP device as a router like you did before and then put your new router behind it. It will mostly work but running 2 routers tend to make things related to port forwarding a huge pain to make work.
I would recommend you do not plug that into your router you can blow the port if a phone call would happen to come in. It will put 90 volts on the line, used to be needed to ring the bells on phones.

It is not a cable issue.

You are not just converting from rj11 to rj45 you are converting from DSL to ethernet and you need a modem to do that. The router you have does not contain a modem.

Your only option to use that router will be to use the ISP router as a modem. You should be able to put their router into bridge mode.
