cannot backup system

So I recently bought a 500GB external drive with the idea of backing up my system. I plugged it in, went to control panel and clicked the option to create a system image, and everything seems to be going well until about 40% of the way when the backup process stops and I get this error message:

The backup was not successful. The error is: Windows Backup failed while trying to read from the shadow copy on one of the volumes being backed up. Please check in the event logs for any relevant errors. (0x81000037).

I have no idea what this means and all of the solutions that I found online didn't do anything for me. If any of you people out there have a solution to this problem I would greatly appreciate an answere.

Solution
To make matters worse, I have tried reformatting the drive which has also failed.
are you formatting the old hard drive? which partition system is it, NTFS or Fat16?

I tried your answer and that did not work either.
this is regarding to which software, EaseUS' Partition Master?

all I know is that my hard drive is very old - probably almost ten years old - which means it is only a matter of time before it dies on me and i have to pay 200 dollars for a data recovery service and another 100+ dollars on a new hard drive.
ok if you are looking for utilities which may help you duplicate the files from one drive to another
that'll be another case

i may suggest to use DriveClone from FarStone
it is available for free for...

check with chkdsk tools is a good suggestion

Here is a thread on the very same issue from Microsoft's Answer site
Seems hard to troubleshoot.

If we can get how to reproduce this error
Maybe we can get our engineers to help out

Otherwise I may suggest to try other solutions than Windows' backup :)

It did not work. I used microsoft security essentials and it said nothing about java being the problem. Also why would I use chdsk on an empty drive?

I have found an article for you, you can try it with EaseUS' Partition Master Free
See if that helps.

If all still fails, i may suggest to use our solution with Total Recovery Pro for scheduling your backups.

I have tried all the solutions above and in other threads, I'm sure they all helped but I kept getting 0x81000037 error UNTIL I found this:
http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

I solved the very same problem by installing a partition manager (Easeus's Free one) and enlarging the standard 100 MB hidden boot partition to 300 MB (any value under 500 MB will do). That was accomplished by shrinking the C partition by 200 MB, moving it up over the unallocated space created on the right (in a linear representation of partitions starting with the hidden one to the left). Then the unallocated space "moved" to the left so I could expand the hidden boot partition.
It appears that Shadow Copy cannot work properly if available space on any drive is less than 40%.

Maybe this worked because my downloads, music, pictures folders became too large for shadow copy to process in the 100mb partition? Whatever, the 300mb partition has cured it for now and if Backup fails again in future I can extend it some more.
Best wishes, Tim

So I tried downloading a third party program; easus todo backup, and that still did not work. Then I tried your answer and that did not work either. On top of that, while using todo, and before I tried your option the program created files on the external drive like: my backups, and my passport apps for mac, which I can't delete. To make matters worse, I have tried reformatting the drive which has also failed.

I have no idea what could possibly be wrong. I don't know if it is my computer, my hardrive, or the software. all I know is that my hard drive is very old - probably almost ten years old - which means it is only a matter of time before it dies on me and i have to pay 200 dollars for a data recovery service and another 100+ dollars on a new hard drive.

it is available for free for home users without any 3rd party programs nor spywares

you can find the direct download here:

(admins please remove the link if not appropriate, thanks)

You should uncheck those additional softwares during installation
