Hey, can anyone help advice me out here:

1. What happens when I set the same name for the 2.4ghz & 5ghz? When my wireless device connects, which does it actually connect to? 2.4 or 5?

2. What if the router also connects directly to an ethernet port, is that ethernet LAN connection constrained by any speed limit/2.4 v 5ghz protocol?

3. LAN connection : Realize using BT, even using direct LAN connection is slower than w/o router. any settings i can tweak to make the router and BT via LAN faster?

thanks

5GHz does not have the same distance as 2.4GHz because it is more attenuated by passing through matter, all you can really do is to add a distant wireless AP. The 5GHz radio should be just as stable as the 2.4GHz, I would recheck all the settings and RMA if under warranty still.

Some Lumia models support and some don't (especially the older models), you will have to Google your model and 5GHz to find out.

1) then you connect to one or the other but do not necessarily know which unless they are prioritized in the network connections
2) usually the LAN port is higher priority than wireless, but you can change that
3) you can get a faster (gigabit switch) if that is how the connection not made through the router are connected.

mind if you share where how do I achieve that? can't find any option the in config that obviously states this option

The modem is connected directly to the router without additional switch, and the LAN cable to the router ports.
doesn't apply then?

Network control panel, change adapter settings, advanced (if you don't see it hit the alt key and it will show up), advanced settings, adapters and bindings tab, just select one of the connections and move it up/down with the arrows. Not exactly an obvious location. :D

Hi pal,

thanks for the advice, i've attached a screenshot of the location you mentioned. Which is the Wi-Fi vs LAN connection? ie which i should i move up/down

My LAN BT dl slows down considerably through the router's lan port as opposed to connecting com. directly to modem

The Local Area Connection is the Ethernet.

If your connection speed is significantly faster when you connect the computer cable direct to the modem, compared to the modem connected to the router WAN port and a computer connected to a LAN port, something is mis-configured or your router is malfunctioning. The speeds for those two connections should be the same. Check out all your cables, one could be bad.

Thanks again for replying pal. If the LAN option is Ethernet, where is the option for my wireless router so I can shift the priorities around like u shared?

I've check the cables and they're fine but I'm not so sure about the mis-configured part because i'm not a gd with the technical part of configuration I've basically used the default auto router setup mode.

Oh, the desktop does not connect to the wireless. What I meant was you know in the router configuration page '192.188.1.1', is there anyway to give priority to LAN (if any)?

Like you said, now its modem->router wan port -> desktop's lan (via router). that makes the router the central control node in all this and it seems to be slowing my BT down even for wired connection.

You can open the configuration pages and use the QoS (quality of service) settings to prioritize specific uses or machines, in your case the wired machine.

From the wired machine go to and run pingtest.net

Also, from an elevated command prompt box on the wired machine (right click run as admin) type ipconfig /all>c:\ipconfig.txt and hit enter. That will create a text file that you can copy and post so I can see if anything looks out of order.

It is very uncommon for a wired connection not to be the fastest, especially on that router, which has the highest total throughput in its class at 1268Mbps.

Hi RealBeast,

sorry for the late reply. I have tried several options but I think have resigned to living with a slower wired connection through router. I suspect the trick is somewhere in the technical configurations which I am not familiar with.

btw, can I also check another more pressing issus with you?

1. It seems that the 5gHz bandwidth has very limited connectivity distance and frequently goes out of range for even 30m while the 2.4ghz can mostly be detected

2. the 5ghz channel also frequently disappears completely from network after some usage and only returns if i restart thr router

3. some devices like nokia phone lumia cannot even detect 5ghz

do you know if the above are common and expected? what advice wld u give?

thanks in advance, you've been a great help thus far :)
