Getting Performance out of Samsung 840 Pro

Greetings, readers. I just bought a new Samsung SSD 840 Pro 256GB upgrading from a 128GB Samsung 830. I have stripped my hardware to bare bones on an MSI P55-GD85 (MS-7585)board with Intel Lynnfield Core i7 860 @ 2.80GHz OCd to 3.49 and with 8GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 636MHz and AMD Radeon HD 5700 Series. There are JMicron and Marvell controllers on Windows 8.1.

My problem is that after trying all of the performance optimizations, including Magician Optimization, I can only get a max of 350MB/s READ and 150 MB/s Write and after spending money to upgrade the drive I do expect to see a performance improvement, as this is about what my Samsun 830 was giving me.

Any thoughts on the above hardware configuration, or why I am not able to get better performance out of this SSD on my system?

You're not getting advertised Read/Write speeds because your motherboard does not have native SATA 3 (6Gb/s) ports.

The Marvell SE9128 controller on your board has a maximum data bandwidth of PCIe x1 at 5Gb/s (500MB/s).

Update your Marvell drivers to version 1.2.0.1039 dated 02/10/2013.
Update your Marvell firmware to version 2.2.0.1125b dated 06/06/2012.

See if that improves your benchmark results.

Also FYI, even if you had a motherboard with native 6Gb/s ports, and both of your drives were performing at advertised speeds, you would not notice any real-world difference upgrading from a Samsung 830 to a Samsung 840 Pro. The only real benefit would be additional storage space.

As it turns out, I had been uses an Asus controller with NEC Bios for SATAIII -- and still only getting 336MB/s on my Samsung 830 - I guess I am just hoping to getting 430MB/s if not 540MB/s like the 840 is supposed to give. I suppose this NEC driver/BIOS might also need to be updated but Magician does say that AHCI and SATAIII/6Gb/s should give maximum performance.

I now have the 830 plugged into the Asus/NEC and the 840 plugged into the Marvell with updated drivers and will perform some comparison. I am unable to update the Marvell BIOS because I'm running Win8.1 64-bit.

Any thoughts on whether the ASUS/NEC or the updated Marvell ports will give better performance/reliability to my Samsung drives?
  3. Updating the Marvell drivers got me about 10-15% speed increase across the board for the Samsung 840
  4. Sorry, I don't know if ASUS/NEC or Marvell will give you the best performance. You'll have to benchmark on each controller and see which is better.
Ultimately, you need Intel 6Gb/s controller to get maximum performance.

If you're having trouble with Win8.1 then just right-click on the .exe file and select "Troubleshoot compatibility". From there you can select Win7 or other versions to install under.
