Looking for best (reasonable cost/performance) wireless router setup given my situation.

Hi,

I am a moderate gamer (league of legends and the occasion Ps3 online) and I live on the lower floor of a two story home with the wireless router located upstairs.

In an ideal situation when no one else is on the internet, I get 23-25 mbps download speed and 10~ pings via wi-fi about 20-25ft away from the router separated by a floor and maybe 1-2 walls.

However, problems arise when there are multiple netflix streaming (usually 2 at 720p) and me gaming. In game I would hit anywhere from 200-600 pings constantly, and the netflix videos would lose HD quality or even 'skip'/'pause'. The overall download speed could drop to 5 mbps.

My current setup is a cisco modem?* not sure..... and a cisco linksys N300 e1200 2.4ghz single band wireless router.

computers linked to the router:

Laptop one (gaming) with 2.4ghz single band network card
Laptop two (web surf/work) with dual band
Laptop three (web surf/work) with 2.4
Laptop four (video streaming) with 2.4
computer one (web surf/work) with 2.4
computer two (web surf) with 2.4
HD video streaming device one for tv at 720p with 2.4 (for netflix)
HD video streaming device two for tv at 720p with 2.4 (for netflix)
PlayStation 3 (occasion online game and mainly streaming netflix) 2.4 only
2-3 wifi based tablets

***** most of my devices are only single band 2.4 ghz 300 mbps capable
***** Laptop four and computer two are on WIRED connection.

I am looking for something to replace my linksys E1200. Something with an improved wifi range, and higher throughput.

I am also highly considering routers with the Advance Quality of Service(QoS) feature. ***Does QoS really make a difference?

Is a gigabit router going to make a difference?
If I get a dual band router like the linksys E2500 (the next step upgrade from E1200), then will I better range and 2.4ghz improvement?
Or is the Netgear N450 WNR 2500 a better choice? (would I even benefit from a N450 if my devices mostly have 300 mbps adapters?)
Or is the D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300 a better choice, just to stick with a N300 with gigabit and QoS.

Ideally, I want a great single band wireless router with good range, throughput, and can handle high traffic use. (i.e. atleast 2 netflix and a league of legends game at the same time)

I am open to other suggestions.

Thanks,

you want dual band, you want something that does at lest 300 Mbps. Linksys is a good brand, Netgear is alright. If you are on a budget ive seen TP-link do alright. If you want to spend a little extra money, make sure the router you choose (if you can look at it in person first) has removable/upgradable antennas. a Long range antenna can make a world of difference going through floors and walls etc, which would mean an increase in speed too. Aside from the slow down when the router is being accessed from many computers, that is normal. You will need to get more bandwith from your ISP to solve an issue like that. Or you can be greedy, and in the router settings allocate bandwith amongst different MAC addresses. This means you could set up the router to give you an extra 20% bandwith over anyone else connected, if you feel this would be fair :p

I would love to have dual band. But since most of my devices don't support 5ghz band, I would assume it is pointless to have a dual band router. Especially when all the streaming devices like the ruku and Ps3 can't be upgraded to dual band by using a USB adapter.

I am now leaning towards the D-link DIR 655 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127215 ).

Thanks Beezy

I had that router, and maybe its just me, but I found it unusable after a year or so. I had to constantly do full resets with the router and modem (I know its not necessarily the router).
and I thought the PS3 already benefits from dual band out of the box. idk id go for it as its probably higher quality parts inside too.,.
