I have a new 80GB IDE HDd that I want to install in a laptop. Need to format it with boot file?

How do you format a new IDE hdd so that it will boot?

Install OS on it and choose format. It will automatically make it a boot drive.

That is the problem. It won't allow the Os to install.

Then something else is wrong since installing OS you boot from your installation media!
