Which of the following would be better?

Would 2x Radeon 7870 be better than a single Radeon R9 290?

If the 7870's would be equal or even a bit worse i wouldnt mind, because it would save me $60

a bit faster yes, but still the single card would be a better choice. especially if you can get your hands on an custom cooler version 290.

It's not a good idea to Crossfire right off the bat. There will be issues like games not supporting Crossfire and you'll probably regret saving that $60.

With two Crossfire and one SLI rig I really have had very little problems with any of my rigs not supporting games at all. Both of my Crossfire rigs run very well even with the latest crop of next gen games. AMD has come along way with the latest CCC drivers they are really very good.
