Okay. I have a WinVista computer that finally broke completely on the day before Thanksgiving. Now, I'm forced to use a Win98 computer. I'm glad I was able to retrieve the files from a different source. Among the issues with the Win98 computer is a broken CD-ROM. When I try to insert a CD, the drive ejects then reinserts automatically two seconds later. I can deal with that. The major problem is that, when a CD is in the drive, the drive works to detect the CD and works overtime, then the LED stays on. At first, I thought it just couldn't read WinVista CDs, but it did that to all my CDs. Is there a possible software fix or at least a way to determine what's wrong? I don't have much money, and I'm not comfortable with hardware--just software.

look at the drive logo..older cd-rom drives were just cd rom they could not read dvd disks. make sure your not using a dvd disk. on some older drives needed firmware updates to fix media read issues. if the drive pop the disks out i would say the drive may be dirty of failed. try blowing the drive out with can air or compressed air.

Overall, sounds like the drive itself has failed. There isn't much software involved with CD ROM drives other than a generic Windows driver. It's not hard to replace one. Just need a new drive (Has to be IDE interface since it's a 98 system) and a Philips screwdriver.

Thank you. You seem to be correct. I'll check on it online. However, I'll need to beg my mother for it--if she has the money. Right now, it's of low priority, as I have other things to do.

smorizio: I already know that it's a plain CD drive, not a CD-RW, not a CD-R and not a DVD. As I said, it won't work on any CD.

If you know someone that does PC repair, they probably have a few laying around that they can give to you for free. When I was doing a lot of PC repairs, I had spare CD drives just laying around.

I go to a day program with computer access. Maybe I can ask the IT department there for a CD-ROM drive. ;)  I had some experience with upgrading hardware, so I might be able to upgrade it myself--or ask my mother to do it for me. BTW, is there a way to upgrade a hard drive myself? It would involve a transfer of all the contents, and I don't have the necessary hardware to do that.
