Hey all, I have a GPU dilemma.

So, I would really like to get a non-reference R9 290 (non x) when they are released, but I have concerns. Anywhere you go on the Internet you hear about amd driver issues.

So my question is how long does AMD support their gpu's for? If I get a 290 I would feel more comfortable knowing that AMD will continue to release updates for it up to 2 years into the future.

Can anyone give me an opinion on this that can maybe be backed up with evidence? I'm not looking for the answer to be "no, go with nvidia."

Hello... Both Nvidia and AMD keep active in their GPU support, constant driver updates and performance tweakes... each GPU can offer better performance in certain software/programs... look at what you want to run on your computer for the best choice.

Both AMD and Nvidia drivers are crap, they are also excellent, it depends who you ask. Unless the issues are Crossfire related, ignore driver gripes.

i got my 7970 about 2 years ago, it's still being supported. it'll seem like there's less support since most of the bugs are stamped out by now, but if a new game comes out (such as bf4), its performance still gets optimized in the new driver releases

in two years you will be fine. if amd was that quick to drop driver support it will piss even their fanboi lol :D  . but as a fact AMD did drop their support for their gpu much earlier than nvidia. right now nvidia still give active driver support down to their 8000 series (which comes out in late 2006). as of april last year amd already drop support for their 4k series and below (their HD4k series launch is around mid 2008)
