Hi Guys,

I'm after some help or reassurance on a bodge job.

I've just brought a new graphics card and I was looking at a Radeon R9 270 but ended up getting the HIS R9 270x because it's quieter and was on sale. I am very stupid and didn't check the different specs properly thinking "yeah that'll be pretty much the same as the other card."

This is what I bought
http://www.hisdigital.com/gb/product2-771.shtml

So the Card arrives, I open my case, spent an hour shuffling cables, zip tying it all up nice and tidy to make room for the new card, screwed it in and went to plug it in...

Turns out this 270x needs 2 PCIE 6 Pin power cables and I've only got a 6+2.

awesome :(

I have got 2 spare 4 pin molex cables though. I was just going to get a 2 x4 pin to a 6 pin converter but the instructions tell me in about 50 languages that they don't recommend it and list it as a bad connection, even giving pictures saying don't do it. I'm not really one for authority but they have gone to great lengths to tell me not to do it.

My PSU is a http://www.dabs4work.ie/products/xilence-xp480-12r-power-480w-quiet-psu-55PH.html so it should take the loading I think.

I want to use my new card and I am stupid and impatient. I'm kinda just thinking sod it, I'll do it anyway and at a later date upgrade my PSU.

What do you think? What's the worst that could happen? The PC blows up? It electrocutes the cat?

(the cat always throws up, I can get a new cat).

You might be able to do it of you had a more reliable PSU, but your current one isn't a well recognized brand and would have a good chance of failing in some fashion. The 290x is basically a rebadged 7970 which has a minimum PSU requirement of 500w, so even if your psu was reliable, there is a chance it wouldn't be able to supply enough power to the card anyway.
Upgrading your PSU is something you should definitely look in to. You can try with your current one but it would be a substantial risk. Try getting a >500w PSU from a reliable brand.
