Direct cable connection on Win95 OSR 2 without installing any drivers or software?

I've got a laptop running Win 95 OSR 2 and I need to get some files off it. The hard drive is not compatible with other motherboards and cannot be swapped out. The floppy controller on the motherboard is busted, so floppies are out. I've been told that a direct cable connection through serial or parallel port (i.e. null modem, LapLink or similar) is my only hope, but before I go ahead and buy the necessary cables I want to verify that I'll be able to use it. I have no way to install any drivers or software, so how will I be able to use Win95's Direct Cable Connection feature? From what I understand, a Windows CD is required to turn on that feature. All suggestions appreciated.

Solution
You'll be using Hyperterminal on the 95 side, over a serial connection (null modem cable) to an equivalent terminal emulator on the other to transfer your files. Any other solution will require either drivers or the Windows CD. Hyperterminal was installed by default on all 95 systems. If this doesn't work then the only other solution is to send the drive to a recovery service (pricey).
