Can't decide: 1080p or 1440p monitor?

I'd like to ask the people here who are not just pc owners but more "hardcore" gamers. With games like battlefield 4 or "twitch fps's" is it better to stick to 1080p or if you have a good enough/higher end system go with a 1440p monitor?

Solution
there is a benq 27inch with 120hz (newer is 144), i forgot the model though. Even linus (youtube) likes it. if i was buying, that one will be on my list. im still happy with my s27a950d (yes its a TN)
if you want to run bf4 on high detail settings at 1440p, your going to want a gtx780 or r9 290 or better for good fps. for 1080p you can get away with a 770 or 280x on high detail settings to maintain solid 60fps, so long as you have a good cpu like a high end i5 or i7.

Well I'd have a gtx 780Ti on a Maximus VI formula with corsairs dominator platnium ram.
What I'm wondering is the latency of a 1440p monitor. I assume it'll run at a minimum of 60fps but will I be able to compete? Or is it better to stick with a 1080p monitor with has a better response time?

personally, i'd wait for the 1440p to go mainstream. but if you can shell out that much then why not.

i play bf4 with my clan mates (though im just a regular player, not elite). and i just lower the settings a bit to keep a high fps (i have a 120hz monitor) for smoother experience. i have a decent setup with a 670 gpu.

Well I was thinking of the Asus PB278Q it has a 5ms response time but I don't believe any 1440p monitor has a 120mhz refresh? Well I won't buy a Korean model I heard those do but if breaks or has dead pixels well too bad.
This will be my first gaming pc so I'm torn, can you lower a 1440p monitor to 1080p/120mhz for certain games?

if money is not a factor then yes. when i bought my monitor, there was not much choice (in terms of models), but im happy with what i have.
but 1080 is not bad. then if you upgrade to 1440 then you will see more the improvement. as opposed to going directly to 1440p :)
