Will SATA III Cable work with SATA I Drive and SATA I plug?

So, basically I was trying to install a second HDD for my rig, but my SATA I cord wasn't long enough, so I bought longer SATA III. My motherboard is rather old and has 2 SATA I connectors, so main HDD runs with SATA I cable. The problem is, I've plugged everything in and HDD is just not detected. What's the problem? I heard all SATAs are compatible? Please help.

Yes. You can plug any type of sata connection into any type of sata connection port. So you can plug a sata 3 into a sata 2 (its the case in my mums computer)

Do you have a good SATA power connection? Are you using a Molex to SATA power adapter?
