The drive is nearly 1 TB in size, but it won't seem to let me copy a file from my PC that is over around 4 GB's in size even though the drive is not even 10% full. Why is it doing this and how do I get it to stop? i've fomatted it to NTFS 5 times and still it doesnt work...... the copying process just stops.......
It says that it's the external hard drive is NTFS type it says " 931,51 GB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition)
When it's starting to copy it just stops, i can see a tiny bit of the green thing, and when i click on "More Details" it says "Time Remaining: Calculating" and The speed is 0,00 MB/Second" but after i waited for a few min it changed to "3,87 MB/Second" and the "Time Remaining to 15 seconds" i've waited more than 15 seconds and it hasnt moved an inch..... a 8gb file doesnt copy in 15 sec... This hasn't happend to me before, the problem started when i tried to format a partion to FAT32 and that didnt go so well, so when i was about to formatted it to NTFS i got the "Write protection" problem so i used CMD to clear the attribute of the disk and the volume of the hard disk, and that worked very well and formated it to NTFS.
The copy procces stops but the drive is still visible in the system and large files are non-responsive. Any ideas?

Backup any data that is already on the external hard drive. Use disk management and remove all the partitions (on the external hard drive). Create one partition and format it NTFS. See if that helps.

I did what you said and still it isn't working, i deleted the Volume in the disk management and formated it to NTFS, and when i tried to copy the 8gb file its still the same, taking ages to copy it to the external hard disk..........

There's some kind of limitation on copying huge files, I'm still working on it for now, but it's not anything to do with all of the advised suggestions all websites keep giving :-(

Although many people may get this problem and not realise about file size limitations (even on a most basic level), it's never enough to advise simply removing and reformatting things in the 'hope' that it 'may' help. Advice like that is the same as the old "I heard a man in the pub say try this".

My own problem is copying an 8Gb WIM recovery file. No matter what software or hardware I use, it refuses to move - it stops about 65% through. A faulty file? Nope, there's 2 of the same size of file on the perfect drive it's coming off, and I can verify the complete file by exploring/testing using 7Zip. It's possible to extract all of the required files and rebuild it into a WIM file again (a WIM file is just a specialised version of a ZIP file). The problem with that is, the time it takes to break down a file of this size - even with the fastest data transfer (USB 2 & 3Gb transfer on the internal HDD) it still would take 2.3 days lol.
