Looking for H87 Motherboard Recommendation

Hi all,

I'm building a new H87-based based system and am looking for a recommendation as to which motherboard to pick. This is for a video/photo editing station, so I want stability and reliability (over the potential extra power I may gain from overclocking); my CPU will be the i7 4770 (not K) and the video card will be a 4GB GTX 770. I do photo and video editing non-professionally, using Adobe Photoshop Elements, Adobe Premiere Elements and Adobe Lightroom. I hardly ever game, but if I do, it's Skyrim, Dragon Age, and similar fantasy RPG stuff--I never play shooters or any kind of "army" games.

I don’t really care about the size of the motherboard (though MiniITX won’t do). ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI all seem to have similar offerings, but I'm having a hard time choosing. Is there anything I should stay away from? Are “Ultra durable” and “Mil Spec” just marketing gimmicks? I see that many H87 boards still include old PCI (not PCIe) slots.. is it a good idea to stay away from those, since they most likely just take up resources that could be better-used elsewhere?

Finally, for RAM, there is no reason to go above DDR3-1600, right? Will pretty much any "decent" 16GB dual-channel kit do? Thinking of getting a two-stick kit so I don't have to throw anything out in case I want to bump up to 32GB in the future.

Thanks a lot,

Dany

It looks like there aren't many choices in the H87 Chipset family: http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/detailed-list/#m=8,18,27&s=24&f=2&c=90&n=4&t=32768
It looks like you can save a few bucks with the MSI. I really don't know if the "Military Class Components" really make a difference or not.

I agree that it would be better if there were no legacy PCI slots, but all of the listed boards have them. You'd have to go to a Z87 chipset or uATX to get all PCIe slots apparently.

1600 MHz RAM will do fine. I would recommend 1.5 v. rating since that is what Intel recommends.
