How badly will my processor bottleneck the gtx 770?

I am currently running an I7-960 on an Asus Sabertooth X58 board and 12gb ram. I am looking to upgrade to probably a gtx 770, maybe even a 780ti after the first of the year. I know my processor will bottleneck the new GPU some, but my question is how badly will it cut into the performance of the new card? I currently play Skyrim (heavily modded), Saint's Row, and Eve. I will be getting Watchdogs when it comes out, and obviously want to keep this card as long as possible. Will this setup be viable, or will I be losing too much performance from the card with the older cpu/mobo?

Its more viable then and solutions atm but I'd invest in a good i5 when you can

There will be no bottleneck, that cpu is still a strong one. :)

I bet your pc was a king a few years ago!

It shouldn't bottleneck. It's still a capable CPU.

In some games it will bottleneck a bit not a lot though not like a 8350 would

My current plan is to kick up the graphics back to top notch this year while my CPU is still in good shape, then next year go with another higher end i7. I just wanted to find out wether or not I'd be wasting the GPU upgrade before I dropped that kind of cash.

The thing is, the 3570k is still a better processor, as it has a newer socket 2011, while the 960 has 1366. Main difference is heat and OC room. You should be fine with the 960, it won't bottleneck the 770, but might bottleneck the 780ti a bit.

Heh, when I built it this baby laughed in the face of lag. I tried to tax the processor a couple of times and never could. But that was back when it was a brand new processor and almost top of the line GPU. It can still handle anything non-gaming I throw at it, and most games will run at max. But the current crop of games are a bit much for it to handle at the level to which I've become acustomed. And the next gen ones that are starting to pop up look to be even rougher on it, so it's time to show her how much I care.

Actually the 3570k uses 1155 socket.

Cool, that was what I needed to know. I really think I'll be going with one of the 4gb 770 cards instead of a 780ti, those are just too expensive still. Since it won't bottleneck the 770, It looks to me like there isn't enough difference between the 960 and the 3570 to justify upgrading the processor right now, not when I was already planning on going all out next year anyway. Thank you for your help, all of y'all. I appreciate how quickly y'all responded and the information was exactly what I'm looking for.

Yeah. I mean there are differences, but I'm sure you could hold off another 1/2 year before upgrading. What's your monitor resolution btw? 4 gb is a lot, the 2gb version may be enough for you.

I'm pushing 5 monitors at 1920x1080 (2 on the 560ti, and the other 3 on a 650gt that's just for the extra monitors and occasionally an Eve online client when I need to keep an eye on something in-game, but am not actively playing). But my skyrim install is very heavily modded with lots of high rez texture replacements. Plus I hope to keep this video card for at least 3 years without upgrading.
