i have a micron 486 pc that still uses the old pc main power connectors instead of ATX. I can't find any similar PSU's online. Are there adapters i can use to put a new ATX psu in it, or should i cut and splice the new psu into the old plugs?

OK. I have a slightly later Pentium II for the same purpose. I'd look on eBay, possibly for a whole machine.
But also, the software could probably be ported to a slightly newer or different machine.

Unless you're very, very careful, splicing in either direction is going to result in a release of smoke.
