Hello! I have an existing system that I would like to upgrade. Here's the setup:

Amd phenom ii x4 925 2.8 quad
Gskill 8gb at 1300 4x2gb
Radeon 5670
1 tb 7200rpm caviar
Corsair 400w at:
+3.3V@20A, +5V@20A, +12V@30A, -12V@0.8A, +5VSB@2.5A
It's a nice psu and it's been great, I just want to see if my computer will blow if I put a 7850 in there.

Exact corsair model:
CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX 400W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply
7850 model:
XFX Core Edition FX-785A-ZNL4 Radeon HD 7850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

Thanks!

When I plug my system into extreme.outervision.com psu calc, I get system usage of 294w, with 15% capacitor aging.

That is about right the HD7850 barely needs a 6 pin PCIe power, it is just past the 75 watt slot limit.

You'll be fine, but that PSU is limited to a single 6-pin PCIe cable. The best card you can get for that is the 270. Any faster and you need more PCIe auxiliary cable.

@redjaron, do you mean that the 7850 that I chose is fine? I saw that it only needs 1 6-pin PCI-e connector

Edit: which my psu has one 6 pin

The R9 270 ( NOT the X 270X ) is basically an underclocked 7870 that shaved the power requirements down to a single 6-pin connector ( review here. ) Most 7850s are also 6-pin, though I suppose some overclocked models might have a second cable.

The original question was whether a 7850 could run on the PSU. I looked up the model and the specs. It has a single 6-pin cable so I said, "Yes, it will work." Then I added that the current PSU can't handle anything more powerful ( currently ) than a R9 270. Sorry if there was any confusion.

Well I guess the difference is that I already new the PSU. The original CX400 is a much better unit than the current line of CX PSU's http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/750
When it was produced all Corsair PSU's were high quality and no skimping on components like is done now with the substandard capacitors in the budget lineup!
