Hello there,

I'm pretty noobish regarding PC hardware, so I looked up your forum for advice regarding the upgrade of my current GPU hardware.

Current PC Specs:
Intel I7-3370 3.4 Ghz
Kingston DDR3 1333Mhz 4 GB x 2
Asus P8H77-M Motherboard
EVGA Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 2GB
650W Generic-Brand PSU

My current aim is to have a AMD R9 GPU (will last me for years, PC gaming, CryptoCurrency mining). Although I've read on these forums, that a single 290x would be better than a Crossfire 270x, I have the following issues:

-My budget is preferably around the 700$ and cannot be over 1000$
-I live in Latinamerica, so shipping from the US will increase the cost of hardware by a significant amount
-I have a Mid Tower PC Case, around 13 inches long

Looking at around 499$ 290x cards (Pretty much any brand is fine for me (but I prefer Asus, MSI, XFX or Gigabyte) + Corsair 850 W PSU and all taxes and shipping to my country included, this setup makes around 750-800$. HOWEVER, my 8.something inch GTX 550 barely fits in my case, a 12 inch R9 will never fit in it. This makes me have to buy a Full Tower, which cost around 130$ and because of some retarded taxes, the whole pack would cost me around 1000$, which I really don't want to spend unless really necessary and worth it.

That is why I looked up the possibility of running 2 x 270x that are smaller than the 290x, and would deliver a equal amount of capability than the 290x. I'm interested in 2 of these specifically:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150687

This card could probably be squeezed in my current case on top of each other (8.7 inch long), and 2 of them would probably match a regular 290x, or that's what I think at least. Buying 2 of these cards and the 850W PSU would cost me around 650-700$ with shipping and taxes to my country.

Well, in conclusion, I have following questions, that I hope you can help me answer!

-Which setup would be more effective in a couple of years time?
-Would a single R290x be really much more effective and stronger than 2x 270x?
-Does my current Mobo actually really support Crossfire? It states it does, but I only see one PCI 3.0 and one PCI 2.0, don't I need 2 x PCI 2.0 for optimal Crossfire?
-Do these new cards deliver on Crossfire or is it not worth it right now?
-Is Crossfire really as faulty as some say?
-Am I an idiot for attempting any of these setups?
-Are these setups OK for the next 3 years? (Plan on playing current and future games in Ultra / High)

TLDR:
-1 R9 290x with new Full Tower PC case, PSU and spending 1k $ and breaking my bank
or
-2 x R9 270x with only a new PSU and spending a modest 700$ (for my country's standards) but delivering the same performance as a single 290x?

Your help is greatly appreciated, thanks for reading!

if you want to mine cryptocurrency the 280X is the card to beat... you don't get better than that.

So I would get a 280X for now (should be good enough for all purposes), and add another 280X for crossfire maybe next year

Thank you for your answer. The 280X does not fit in my current case, so I would have to buy the Full Tower. A setup with a 280x, PSU and Case would cost me around 700$. Wouldn't a single 290x or two 270s be better than just a single 280?

Whether or not it will last you depends upon you. As for what you should spend, that's also up to you, although it's worth noting that it is next to impossible to purchase a 290X, 290, or 280X, they are sold out everywhere (I should know, I'm looking to buy 4).

Crossfire 270x will outperform a R9 290x. Cost $418 + tax Canadian. Why not save money. When it's time to upgrade your GPU will be toast anyway, get new gear when the time comes.
