I'm on my second build and have all my hardware planned and expect to be playing next-gen games and running CADs for my engineering classes. But Microsoft has stopped updating DirectX on 7 and im wondering if i should muddle through the god awful aesthetics for the sake of performance, not now but in the future? I understand that now there is very little difference but im afraid of windows 8 exclusives and directX incompatibility or lowered performance

No, "Jake", I sleep quite well.

Seeing as this was written in 2013, and Win 7 does not fall off extended support until 2020...that gives it 7 years from the date written.
Now, considering many users will use it past that 2020 date, let's give it 9 years.

What performance will you wring out of a 9 year old PC?
Me personally, mine don't "fill up landfill's". They live on in other uses.

For instance, my current house server/HTPC is about to become a whole house firewall box.
No landfill there.
My current main PC (2012) will form the genesis of the replacement house server.
hmm....don't see anything going to the landfill there either.

Hows about you get down off that high horse of yours.
